It’s tempting to buy a grill that looks the most interesting, just so you have a talking point for your next barbecue get-together. However, these fancy-looking grills are almost always faulty in some way and won’t last you for anywhere near as much time as you’d like.
Likewise, a cheap grill is also tempting in the hopes that you’ll save a bit of money. More often than not; however, you won’t be saving money at all as you’ll be replacing the grill before you know it.
That’s where the Grilla Grills come in. Not only does its price point make it surprisingly budget-friendly at under $1000, but it is also eye-catching and uniquely designed. Who said the best grills all had to look the same?
The Grilla Alpha is one of few eye-catching grills that are actually worth your time and money.
This wood pellet grill is quickly becoming one of the most sought-after grills of its kind on the market, so if you’re thinking of getting it you shouldn’t delay.
Today we’ll be looking at all things Grilla Grills to see whether this is the best grill for your needs. Although we and a lot of other grill enthusiasts love this grill, it might not be for everyone. So, let’s get right into our Grilla Grills review.
A quick look at the Grilla Alpha
We’ve chosen to focus on the Grilla Alpha today as it shares its name with its manufacturer, making it the flagship grill for the company. It is a wood pellet grill giving you a smoky flavor to your food, which is often highly desirable with a grill.
Grilla also creates more traditional grills such as the Silverbac and a Kamado style grill under the name Kong. These are just as impressive as the Grilla and come with their own unique set of features that you might enjoy more.
Grilla has been on the market for a while now, but in recent times they have reduced their prices considerably. When first emerging on the market, Grilla’s prices were much higher which commonly put people off buying from a relatively unknown brand.
However, since reducing the cost of their grills Grilla has become much more popular and is beginning to accumulate a nicely sized customer base.
The cooking space is impressive on the Grilla Alpha with 488 square inches at your disposal. Looking at an image of this grill, you might find this hard to believe – but it’s true. The main grill has a cooking space of 346 square inches and the upper cooking area consists of 142 square inches.
Comparing the price to the cooking space, you won’t be getting the most from your investment with this grill. Grilla’s Silverbac offers a cooking space of 692 square inches for a lower price, so if you need a more impressive space then we suggest looking to Grilla’s other options.
However, the Grilla Alpha’s cooking space is more than enough to cook for a medium-sized family or a small to medium-sized gathering.
The higher price is forgiven in our eyes due to the supreme build quality and design, and we think that the grill is a good choice for many people looking for their own wood pellet grill. Let’s look into the key features in more detail below.
Key Features of the Grilla Alpha
You just have to glance at the Grilla Alpha to know that the design is meant to become a centerpiece of your garden. However, the design isn’t just to look good – it actually has a purpose.
The egg shape ensures that there are no corners for heat to miss, meaning that the likelihood of cold spots is much lower than if you were using a grill with more prominent corners.
This allows the temperature to remain consistent throughout the entire grill, offering better cooking times. Your food will cook more evenly thanks to the cleverly designed shape of this grill.
The lid swings around which allows you to check on your food quickly before closing it again, preventing you from losing too much heat. The grill can get back up to temperature before long without stretching out your cooking times so much.
We also like the fact that the lid disappears into itself so that you don’t have to take up space with a hot lid.
The legs have rubber casters with a foot pedal brake for you to use to move and secure the grill whenever you need to.
The build quality of the Grilla Alpha is where the main benefits stem from. On the interior is a double wall of 14 gauge steel lining it, acting as a thermal jacket to keep all of the heat where it’s needed most.
This allows you to cook through both the day and evening, even as the temperature drops.
This is just one of the many benefits that come with a wood pellet grill, allowing you to cook for longer periods of time without spending lots of money on the fuel. Grilla also allows you to use any pellet brand with this grill so that you aren’t paying more for a special type of pellet.
Ease of Use
You might look at the Grilla Alpha and worry that it is too difficult to put together. However, this is not the case at all. In fact, this is one of the easiest grills that we have ever put together.
Put together might be the wrong terminology as everything ships to your doorstep already assembled. All you need to do is stand it the right way up and attach a few screws as per the instructions.
You should season the grill before using it to remove any oil or dirt that has accumulated from the building process. The first time you use it you’ll need to have it on for 45 minutes before you can get your food on it.
Now you’re ready to use the Grilla Alpha. The digital thermometer has a touchpad integrated into the meat probe, ensuring that you’ll always know exactly when your food is cooked without the guessing game.
Contrary to popular belief, some wood pellet smokers can actually be very lacking with their smoky flavor. This is not an issue with the Grilla Alpha; however. The grill features a temperature swing to ensure that lots of smoke is continuously being produced.
The temperature swing means that it drops just enough to force the auger to allow more pellets into the firebox. These are burned with the other pellets that aren’t quite finished burning yet, amping up the temperature and the smoke production.
The more smoke created, the more powerful the flavor. This clever temperature swing technology tricks your grill into giving your food a richer flavor.
What We Loved
- The temperature ranges from 180 to 500 degrees Fahrenheit, allowing you to cook a range of foods.
- Excellent build quality will last you for much longer than cheaper grills.
- You’ll get a sense of premium quality when cooking with the Grilla Alpha thanks to the swing lid, clever shape, and durable material.
- Keeps the smoky flavor throughout the entire cooking process.
- Grilla offers a 4-year warranty to protect your purchase.
What We Didn’t Like
- The cooking space is slightly smaller than other grills of the same price on the market. This should suffice many families and small gatherings but won’t suit everyone who wants a more impressive cooking space.
Grilla Alpha vs Silverbac Alpha
Both of these grills are wood pellet burning and have a similar price point, although the latter is slightly cheaper. You might not know which to opt for between the two as the fundamentals are very similar.
However, there are a few distinct differences between the two grills, with the first being the unique shape of the Grilla. This egg shape is much different from the traditional box shape of the Silverbac.
The Grilla’s shape is better for avoiding cold spots, leading to a more even cooking process and slightly quicker cooking times. However, the Silverbac also avoids too many cold spots thanks to the rounded lid, which avoids sharp corners.
Another difference is that the Silverbac uses more pellets due to the larger size. The Silverbac offers a larger cooking space but it will cost more to maintain the heat. If you don’t need the impressive cooking space, we would recommend the Grilla for the pellet savings.
Overall, the Grilla is better than the Silverbac in our eyes. However, you might find that the latter has better features for your personal requirements.
We think that the Grilla grills are excellent investments for anyone who’s looking for a new grill.
The Grilla Alpha is the best of their catalog, with a reasonable cooking space and innovative technology to make your grilling experience as enjoyable and impressive as possible.
The only downsides to this grill are the smaller cooking space and the elevated price point.
However, we think that the additional price is more than made up for with the build quality and innovative design.
