Best Hybrid Grills

You know what? My partner just loves that charcoal taste you get from grilling over a charcoal grill.

But the kids? They can’t stomach it at all.

And you know what it’s like – you want to please everyone, right?

After spending all that time and effort making homemade burgers, the last thing you want is for a family member to be complaining about them.

But, you’ll be pleased to hear there’s an easy solution. You can get yourself a hybrid or dual fuel grill.

We’ve been checking out some of the best hybrid grills on the market today, and after much deliberation we were able to hand-pick our top 5 favorites to show you.

Our reviews on them are coming up very shortly, complete with a quick run down of their pros and cons. And after that we also have a buying guide for you that will walk you through the main things to consider before you buy.

And without further ado, let’s get cooking!

Best Hybrid Grills

Char-Broil Gas2Coal 3-Burner Liquid Propane and Charcoal Hybrid Grill

If you already know your grills, it should come as little surprise to you that our number one pick comes from no other than top brand Char-Broil. And it absolutely ticks all the boxes.

In the photo it sure looks quite modest in size, but it actually offers plenty of cooking space, 540 square inches to be precise. This is made up of a 420 square inch primary cooking area combined with a 120 square inch warming rack. Plenty of room to accommodate food for the entire family plus a few guests.

The warming rack may not receive as much heat as the primary cooking area, but it’s great for keeping things warm, or for toasting a few burger buns.

And converting it from a gas grill to a charcoal one is super easy. You can do it in just 4 simple steps in under a minute. And you don’t need any special tools. The directions are all laid out on the product page – just click on “check price” to be taken to it.

We love how you don’t need any lighter fluid to ignite the charcoal, and you can just use the gas burners for ignition.

It can throw out a whopping 40,000 BTU of heat, so you can enjoy your food in no time at all. There are 3 independently operable burners, so you can cook on up to 3 different temperatures.

And that’s not all, there’s also a 12,000 BTU side burner with a lid. And if you’re not using it as a grill, it converts to a flat food prep area (or plating up area).

There are other handy features too – a charcoal tray and propane tank storage, reliable electronic ignition, a lid-mounted temperature gauge, and a handy side shelf on the right.

The grill is super easy to clean, much thanks to the rust resistant porcelain coated cast iron grill gates. And all the parts are of excellent quality and are designed to be durable.

It’s also easy to maneuver, the grill has its own cart with large wheels on one side, so you can just drag it to where you want to set up.

It comes backed by a great comprehensive warranty – 5 years for the burners, 2 years on the lid and firebox, and a 1 year warranty on the remaining parts

Pros:

  • Comes from a great top brand
  • Converts from gas to charcoal
  • Throws out 40,000 BTUs of heat
  • Side burner doubles as a shelf
  • Backed up by a great warranty

Cons:

  • Requires some assembly
  • You can’t have it grilling via gas and charcoal at the same time

Char-Griller 5050 Duo Gas-and-Charcoal Grill

Now, this is a grill with some impressive cooking space – a whopping 1,260 square inches to be exact. Definitely enough to accommodate a large cookout in your backyard!

It comes from brand Char-Griller, and has been rated at 5 stars out of 5 by more than two thirds of the customers who bought through Amazon.

Another thing we love about this one is how you can have it working as both a charcoal grill and a propane grill at the same time, without having to convert it from one type to the other. Solving that issue we talked about in our introduction.

The charcoal grill is on the right while the gas grill is on the left, and they are very similar in size. There’s also a gas side burner to the left of the gas grill, which is great for making sauces on. But if you didn’t need it, you can just put the lid down flat and use the area as a shelf for food prep or plating up.

The gas grill area sports 3 independently operable burners to give you precise control over each element of the meal. And it can throw out a whopping 40,800 BTUs of heat to easily achieve temps up to 500 degrees Fahrenheit.

The charcoal system is really good too, you can adjust the height of the charcoal grate, so you can go low and slow, or if you prefer go for a high heat and get those delicious sear marks.

Both the gas side and the charcoal side feature handy warming racks. And both sides feature a lid mounted temperature gauge. Very handy.

The grill is super easy to clean, thanks to the easy dump ash pan on the charcoal side, and the wipe clean porcelain coated cast iron cooking grates.

The cart it’s on has some nice features also, such as wheels on one side and a handle on the other, so you can just drag it out of your garage when you want to use it, a spot to stash the propane tank, and a handy condiment basket in front of the charcoal grill.

Pros:

  • Operate the 2 grills simultaneously
  • 1260 square inches of cooking space
  • Achieve temps of up to 500 degrees
  • Side burner doubles as a shelf
  • Excellent charcoal & gas systems

Cons:

  • Some customers found it tricky to assemble

When we saw that after about 1000 individual customer ratings on Amazon, the average still came out at a whopping 4 and a half stars out of 5, we just had to see what all the fuss was about.

And what we found was a bargain! This has to be one of the most affordable dual fuel combination charcoal-gas grills that we have seen. No wonder it’s a bestseller with the online retailers!

You’ve got a generous 557 square inches of cooking space to work with and that’s split to 262 square inches for the charcoal grill side which is on the left, and 295 square inches for the gas grill positioned on the right side…

That’s enough space to accommodate a whopping 32 burgers! And that’s not all, there’s also a 188 square inch warming rack as well. Great for toasting a few buns on!

The gas side throws out a whopping 24,000 BTUs, so there’s no shortage of heat to work with. And it has three independently operable burners, so you can have some food cooking on a low heat, some at medium and some at high. So much control and precision.

And there’s also a side gas burner at the very right of the grill. Great for making your side dishes on. Or alternatively, you can put the lid down and use the flat surface as a plating up area.

It’s easy to clean, thanks to the removable ash tray and the porcelain coated heat plates. This special coating on the heat plates also serves to reduce flare-ups on the charcoal side. Excellent safety feature.

If you don’t have enough room to stow it away in your garage or utility room, you can keep it outside and buy a cover for it (sold separately).

Pros:

  • Bargain affordable price tag
  • Operate the 2 grills simultaneously
  • 557 square inches of cooking space
  • The side burner doubles as a shelf
  • Reduced flare-ups on charcoal side

Oklahoma Joe’s Charcoal/LP Gas/Smoker Combo

Technically this is a hybrid smoker and grill and not just a hybrid grill, but it’s such a good one, we thought it was well worth an entry onto our shortlist!

It comes from a great brand Oklahoma Joe’s, that’s been around since 1987, and is highly recommended by those who’ve tried it.

If you’ve never used a smoker before, believe me you are missing out! There’s nothing like setting a brisket to cook low and slow in the smoker all day, while you make your other meals in the remainder of the device. Delicious.

You get a whopping 1,060 square inches of cooking space to work with. That works out as 750 square inches split between the gas and the charcoal cooking chambers, and there’s also 310 square inches in the firebox chamber on the left hand side.

And there’s also a side burner on the right hand side that you can take advantage of. Or if you don’t need it you can use the lid of the side burner for food prep or plating up.

The gas grill chamber features 3 independently operable burners, which means that you can have different foods cooking at three different temperatures within the chamber, giving you ultimate control.

Both the charcoal and the gas chambers feature a lid mounted temperature gauge, which means that you can put the lids down and your meats can retain that all important moisture, so they’re nice and juicy when they’re ready to eat.

Moreover, there are multiple dampers across the smoking chamber and firebox that allow for ultimate smoke and heat control.

It’s built to be durable, with its heavy duty steel construction. And the cast iron grates are easy to clean because they are porcelain coated.

And it has large wheels on one side for easy maneuvering.

Pros:

  • It’s both a grill and a smoker!
  • 1060 square inches of cooking space
  • The side burner doubles as a shelf
  • 3 independently operable burners
  • Lid mounted temperature gauges

Cons:

  • It’s a smoker rather than a regular grill, so if you’ve never used a smoker before it could take some getting used to

Buying Guide

As promised here’s your buying guide. We’ll give you a few things to mull over and hopefully that will help you to decide which might be the best hybrid grill for you.

Cooking Space

First and foremost, you’ll want to ensure that your hybrid grill has enough cooking space to cater for everyone who’s attending your cookout. And if you’re anything like me, it’s a case of the more, the merrier.

All of our product reviews state the amount of cooking spaces in square inches, which makes it easier to compare the different cooking space of each grill.

Ability to use Charcoal and Propane Simultaneously

Some hybrid grills have to be converted from a propane grill to a charcoal grill if you want to use charcoal, much like with our number 5 pick the Char-Broil Gas2Coal Hybrid Grill. And that suits some people just fine…

But if you have that issue we discuss in our introduction where some guests like the charcoal taste and some don’t, then you’re going to end up disappointing somebody if you don’t have a charcoal and a propane grill that can run alongside each other.

Thankfully we’ve found some great hybrid grills that can do just that, specifically our number one pick, all the way through to our number 4 pick.

Brand

Although there’s a lot to be said for buying from a brand that you know and trust, there are more important factors to consider when buying a new product, such as how well it’s gone down with customers and overall quality and performance.

So together with the top brand Char-Broil in our shortlist, you may also find some hidden gems.

Value For Money

Now, if there’s anything that varies in price, it’s grills. And even within just one brand you can see a lot of variation in price.

So, our advice to you is to make sure you’re not in the dark about how much these things cost, and to check the prices as you go along. In our shortlist we were sure to include options for every level of budget.
